[Tom Popper]
After 11 years in the newspaper business, I got into the web business.
I used to oversee the editing and production of daily papers. Now I deal in the editing and production of online products.
I could describe this as a natural career progression and say that all newspapers will be online in the future. But I won't say that, because I think that's a load of tripe. As long as there are subways to ride and fish to wrap there will always be newspapers.
I don't believe the Internet is going to *replace* newspapers or magazines or TV, or any of the other conventional media. I think it's an interesting new medium with it's own special uses. I like the idea of employing this medium in ways that take advantage of its unique possibilities. I like the idea of making the Internet make my life better.
On the subject of my life, it has gone as follows: I was born young, in Washington D.C., a first-generation Hungarian immigrant. I grew up in New York and was raised as an American. Now I'm back in the mother country and I like it. Hungarians manage to be incredibly warm, friendly and cynical at the same time. And Budapest has about a half dozen daily newspapers — twice as many as New York City.
